Session 6: Fasting Isn’t a Diet
Fasting in prayer can be one of the most heroic things we do. When we fast and pray we lay our lives down for the person we're praying for, and in turn open ourselves up for the Lord to work in our own hearts in a deeper way. By adopting this practice of faith in our lives like Jesus did, we begin allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us, becoming more and more like Jesus. In this session we’ll learn what it means to fast, why we pray through fasting in the Church, and how we can fast well.
Session 5: The ARRR Prayer Method
Having a conversation with God is different than any other conversation, because we physically can't hear or see Him. For this reason, we often need practice to learn how to talk with Him in a conversational way. The ARRR prayer method—sometimes called “the Pirate Prayer”—is a great tool for growing in the practice of conversational prayer. In this session, we’ll learn a new way to help us grow in having a conversation with the Lord.
Session 4: How Do I Hear God?
“Does God speak to me?” We say that prayer is a conversation, but it can often feel one-sided. We can feel as though we're doing all the talking in prayer, while God is silent. But the truth is that God wants to speak to us and does speak to us! It just takes practice for us to learn how to hear God's voice and recognize the different ways He speaks to us in prayer. In this session, we’ll learn some of the ways we can grow in recognizing the voice of God and how to handle distraction during prayer.
Session 3: Building a Habit of Prayer
Simply wanting to pray isn’t enough. We may desire to grow closer to God and know that prayer is essential, but when it comes time to actually do it, distractions, excuses, and busy schedules can get in the way. We have to build prayer into our lives like any other habit—something that becomes second nature. In this session, we talk through practical tools and tips that will help you get started in building a habit of daily prayer in your life.
Session 2: Praying with Scripture
“Catholics don’t know the Bible”. This is a common stereotype many of us have heard, and it begs the question, “is Scripture something I actively engage with in my daily life or just passively listen to at Mass?” In this session, we dive into our call as Catholics to engage Scripture well, and walk through a method of praying with Scripture called Lectio Divina.
Session 1: What is Prayer?
Am I a friend or a fan of Jesus? This is one fundamental question we all must ask ourselves when we begin learning how to pray. Because prayer, is all about relationship. God invites us to be in relationship with Him through prayer — spending time with Him, talking with Him as we would with a friend, and sharing our hearts and lives with Him. And as we spend time in prayer and in conversation with Jesus, we will become more like Him.
